“Hello, everyone! It is our pleasure to take you to explore circular economy on this World Environmental Day!” Amid the national campaign of garbage classification, you may wonder where the classified garbage go and how they are treated.  On the morning of June 5, Beijing Daily client-Beijing Live and Beijing State-owned Assets Management Co., Ltd (BSAM), give a live streaming on the cloud of how garbage is turned into green energy in Circular Economy Industrial Park,  Beijing Municipal Administrative Center, with millions of netizens watching the show online.

Unlike other waste treatment plants in your imagination, it is a garden-like modern industrial park, with greening rate of up to 30%.  The lotus flowers in the landscaping pool here have bloomed, surrounded by the office buildings which adopt the "quadrangle courtyard" design with Beijing architectural characteristics, having unique and elegant atrium gardens.

The production building of 39,000m2 in the Park can store and burn the garbage, carry out flue-gas treatment and steam power generation. The building consists of three blocks in red, yellow and blue respectively, looking from afar like a huge Rubik’s Cube. The three-color facade makes the whole Park a landmark in the zone.  It is learned that the Park receives more than 30mn visitors from all walks of life annually, including many students of primary schools and middle schools.

“We mainly treat the garbage classified as “other waste”by turning them into energy.” said Han Liguo, General Manager of the Park. The Park has three waste incineration lines with the capacity of treating 2250 tons of waste a day and actual annual capacity of up to 900,000 tons. The heat generated from the incineration can drive two units of 25MW turbine generators to generate 1.2mn KwH electricity, with annual on-grid energy of 220mn KwH.

Every morning, trucks loaded with garbage entering the Park one after another come to weighbridge for weighing before dumping the garbage in the feeding area. All of the garbage which are put into garbage warehouse which can hold up to 24,000 tons are piled, fermented, drained and stirred over a period of 5-7 days to have more thermal value. Next, a huge grab bucket puts the processed waste into the incinerator. The grab bucket can take up to 10 tons of garbage at one time.

It can be seen from the monitoring screen in the Central Control Room that the garbage is burning. We are told that the temperature inside the incinerator is about 1000℃. The flue-gas generated from incineration is desulfurized, removed dust and denitrated in the purification area to reach the criteria before they are pumped into the chimney through an induced draft fan and expelled into the atmosphere. The LED electronic display screen at the gate to the Park displays indexes of gas discharge.  The slag goes to the slag pit and can be used for road brick making later.

A gate-like chimney is 82 meter tall, being a landmark in the surroundings. Standing on the 68-meter-tall viewing platform, you can overlook the whole Park area full of green, Beijing Municipal Administrative Center and Tongzhou District to the north, Langfang City to the south and Wuqing District of Tianjin Municipality to the east.

The waste can be reduced by more than 90% after incineration and utilization, which is equivalent to saving 100 mu of land for piling garbage every year; the power generated from garbage incineration is  equivalent to saving nearly 88,000 tons of standard coal each year  and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 200,000 tons...The environmental benefits brought by the Park are considerable, realizing the harmlessness, reduction and resource utilization in the waste disposal. Huang Jianzhong, vice president of Green Power Group, said that they will uphold the business philosophy of "social benefit first and economic benefit first" set by BSAM, innovate investment and financing models, give full play to the advantages of project scale, promote technological innovation and progress, and make more and greater contributions to the construction of ecological civilization.
